I love burgers. And there is always a good occasion to eat them – from summer barbecue to being at birthday party to having some comfort food on a cold winter day.

Even more than my love of burgers is my love of talking about food (and even more so eating). So when a friend mentioned she had a great Black Bean Burger recipe I jumped at asking her to share it with me.

There are a lot of vegan / vegetarian friendly burgers out there but there’s something about making my own and knowing what’s in the recipe makes it even more satisfying to eat.

This recipe is inspired by Deliciously Ella where I’ve included options for most of the ingredients in case you don’t have all the ingredients at home. Recipes are meant to inspire your creativity in the kitchen right?!

Enjoy this Black Bean Burger recipe that is packed with protein and goes really well with an Almond Butter Sauce. I often eat them with an ABC Slaw.

Ingredients

  • 2 x 15oz cans black beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1 cup chickpea flour
  • 3 tbsp tomato purée or tomate sauce
  • 1 apple, blended
  • 1/2 tsp chilli powder
  • 2 tsp tamari
  • 2 tsp apple cider vinegar
  • juice from 1 lime or from 1/2 a lemon
    oil (for frying)

Instructions

Step 1

Place beans in a blender, magic bullet, or food processor and blend until mushy but not totally smooth; there should still be some whole beans in the mix. You will want chunks of beans. You can mash them with a fork or masher but that takes a lot more time.

Step 2

Place in bowl and add in the remaining ingredients until mixed together.
Shape the mixture into balls – should make about 12 depending how big you make them.

Step 3

Heat a saucepan with a little oil, then place burger balls into the pan. Flip after 30 seconds when they have a bit of a grill and flatten so they are about 1/2 inch thick. Let the burgers cook for about 2 minute on each side.
